🏙️ Why I Chose Hong Kong as My Home Base for Travel Blogging
“Little did I think I’d be back—let alone living here.”
When I first came to Hong Kong for my wedding back in 2017, I never imagined I’d return, let alone call it home. Fast forward to today: Hong Kong isn’t just where I live—it’s my base, my gateway to Asia, and one hell of a place to be a travel blogger.
💭 Wait… Why Hong Kong?
Let’s be real—most travel bloggers choose places that are more affordable. Chiang Mai, Bali, Da Nang… all great spots. But Hong Kong? It’s different.

It’s fast, fierce, and full of flavor. And while it may not be the cheapest city in Asia, it’s got something that keeps pulling me in.
✈️ Where It All Began
My passion for travel? It really sunk its teeth in when I first made it to Thailand. But the romantic idea of adventure in a faraway land? That goes way back to Lanzarote, 1994.
“That story’s for another time—but let’s just say the seed was planted early.”
🌏 What Travel Means to Me
Is it the food? The beaches? The cheap shopping?
For me, it’s a little bit of everything:
- The buzz of a new city
- The sights and sounds that hit you instantly
- The smells of street food and incense
- The transport, the markets, the culture

It all fulfills me. It embeds a sense of wonder. And Hong Kong delivers all of this—in droves.
🚇 One Big Small Place (Or Small Big Place?)
Hong Kong is compact, but bursting with variety. Unlike Thailand, where you need to fly between Chiang Mai, Bangkok, and Phuket, Hong Kong does it all within an MRT, taxi, or bus ride.
One moment you’re in a neon-lit shopping district. The next? You’re hiking a mountain trail or sipping seafood soup in a sleepy fishing village.
“It’s one really big small place—or one really small big place. Still not sure which way round it goes.”
📸 A Blogger’s Playground
Hong Kong is a content machine. Here’s why it works for me:
- 🍜 Food: From Michelin-starred dim sum to hole-in-the-wall noodle joints
- 🏮 Culture: Temples, festivals, street art, and traditions
- 🏨 Hotels: Luxe towers, boutique hideaways, and quirky guesthouses
- 🛍️ Markets: Temple Street, Ladies Market, wet markets galore
- 🎉 Events: There’s always something happening
And the best part? It’s all happening in one place. No layovers required.
🧭 What This Blog Is All About
This blog is my way of sharing that magic. I dive into:

- Events
- Hotels
- Activities

Not just in Hong Kong – China and Thailand too. But for now—Hong Kong is the star of the show.
🌟 Why Hong Kong Works for Travel Bloggers
🧭 Convenience at Your Fingertips
Hong Kong is built for movement. You’ve got:
- A world-class transport system (MTR, ferries, buses, trams)
- Food on every corner—from street snacks to fine dining
- Shopping that ranges from luxury malls to gritty markets
- Nature escapes like beaches, islands, and hiking trails—all within reach
It’s a city where you can pretty much shoot five different types of content in one afternoon.
🌍 Culture Meets Language
Hong Kong is where East meets West, and you feel it everywhere:
- Cantonese and English coexist in signage, menus, and daily life
- The infrastructure is global-standard, but the culture is deeply local
- For bloggers, this means accessibility—you can navigate, communicate, and create without language barriers. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it is manageable.
🏝️ Affordable Living Is Possible
Sure, Hong Kong has a reputation for high rent—but there are pockets of peace:
- Lamma Island, where I live, offers a slower pace and lower prices
- It’s a short ferry ride from Central, but feels worlds away
- You get space, community, and affordability—without losing connection to the city
🔄 You’ll Never Run Out of Content
Hong Kong is a global hub, which means:
- Year-round events: art fairs, food festivals, cultural celebrations
- New openings: restaurants, hotels, exhibitions
- Constant change: neighborhoods evolve, trends shift, stories emerge
It’s a city that keeps giving.
✈️ Seamless Connections to Asia
Need a change of scenery? Easy.
- Thailand is a short flight away—perfect for weekend getaways or extended shoots
- Mainland China is just across the border—hop on the high-speed rail to Shenzhen
- You’re plugged into Asia’s travel network, with endless possibilities
So, there you have it. The variety that Hong Kong offers is truly superb and lends itself to someone like me, but I understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok.
Thanks for being here as always. I’m excited to continue sharing this adventure with you.
